About Nepal Water Resource Portal

The Nepal Water Resource Portal provides a complete picture of Nepal’s water resources and its varied uses. It is a database of all major and minor rivers and river basins along with operational, under construction and under survey hydropower projects on these rivers. In addition, the website includes irrigation projects and groundwater level across the country, giving a spatial representation of Nepal’s water resource and its utilities.

The team working on the portal was inspired by the lack of composite information on how water resources are used or at times even exploited. This portal, therefore, provides a tool to analyze water resources and the development of a region. It uses GIS to locate the infrastructure projects on each river, within the administrative boundaries along with the salient features of those projects, bringing to light the developmental trajectory of our rivers.

Andhi Khola Hydroelectric Center

Syangja, Gandaki

Andhikhola plant is under operation since 1991 with an installed capacity of 5.1 MW. The power plant had 3 Pelton turbines of 1.7 MW each. The project was built under the aegis of UMN with old used equipments from Norway. The Andhikhola Project is a basin transfer project wherein water from Andhikhola river is drawn from a point not so far from Andhikhola – Kaligandaki confluence and after generation of power is discharged into Kaligandaki river. The upgradation works started in 2067 and completed construction at the end of 2072. The commercial operation date (COD) has been achieved in 22nd Chaitra 2072. After the upgradation, addition 4.3 MW power and 30 GWh of annual energy generation have been added to the Integrated Nepal Power System (INPS). The power is being evacuated by 132/33 kV substation newly built by NEA at Rangkhola, Syangja. The project was financed by International Financing Corporation (IFC) and Mega Bank Limited, Nepal.

Jhimruk Hydropower Plant


The Jhimruk hydropower plant is a 12 MW run-of-river plant built and commissioned in 1994. Owned and operated by Butwal Power Company (BPC), Jhimruk is located in the Pyuthan district inthe Mid-Western Regionof Nepal. The project benefits from a 205 m net head caused by the water diversion from the Jhimruk river to the Madi River. Both rivers meet around 30 km downstream.

Puwa Khola Hydropower Station


Puwa Khola Hydropower Station, run of river type, located at Golakharka, Ilam having installed capacity of 6.2 MW and annual design generation of 48 GWh was commissioned in 1999 AD. It was jointly developed by Government of Nepal and NEA at a cost of USD 15.7 million. It is the only sizable hydropower plant NEA has in the Eastern part of Nepal. The station has two units each with 3.1 MW. The cumulative generation of the station has reached 357.13 GWh till 2011/12 from its first run. The station has generated 31.55 GWh in FY 2010/11 and 28.33 GWh in FY 2011/12 with a decrease of 10.2%. The generation from the station contributed 0.68% of the total energy in INPS in 2011/12.

Modikhola Hydropower Station

Dimuwa, Parbat

Modikhola Hydropower Station is run of river and is located at Dimuwa, Parbat having installed capacity of 14.8 MW and annual design generation of 92.5 GWh. It was commissioned in 2000 AD and developed in assistance from EDCF (Korea), Government of Nepal and NEA at a cost of USD 30 million. The performance of the plant is largely unsatisfactory during rainy season compared to other identical hydropower stations in spite of being a relatively new plant. Modi Khola has a high content of abrasive sediments. Due to reported sub-optimal design of the headworks, the existing sediment handling facilities are inadequately prompting intrusion of abrasive sediments into turbines and thereby eroding turbines, butterfly valves, and wicket gates along with other allied facilities such as combined bearing coolers. The station also lacks adequate spare parts to carry out the repair and maintenance works. The ongoing rehabilitation project is expected to address these problems. The cumulative generation of the station has now reached 610.41 GWh till 2011/12 from its first run. The station has generated 59.96 GWh in FY 2010/11 and 34.61 GWh in FY 2011/12 with a decrease of 42.28%. The generation from the station contributed 0.83% of the total energy in the INPS in 2011/12.

Kaligandaki A Hydropower Station

Beltari, Syangja

Kaligandaki A Hydropower Station, located at Beltari, Syangja is the largest power station in Nepal with an installed capacity of 144 MW with 3 units each having capacity of 48 MW. It is a six hours peaking run-of-river type power station having an annual design generation of 842 GWh and was commissioned in 2002. Aided by favorable river discharge and increasing load in the western region, it exceeded the target and design generation in FY 2011/12. This also indicated that with rigorous operation practice in the intake area, timely repair activities and proper operational support, generation can be increased even further. The cumulative generation of the station till F/Y 2011/12 has reached 6,960.431 GWh from the first run. The plant recorded the highest generation of 860.754 GWh so far in F/Y 2011/12 which is an increase of 11.0% compared to that of the previous year and has a share of 20.6% of the total energy in INPS in FY 2011/2012.

Upper Bhotekoshi Hydroelectric Project


Bhote Koshi Power Company Private Limited (BKPC) owns and operates the Upper Bhote Koshi Hydroelectric Project (UBKHEP) which is the first privately funded, run of the river hydroelectric power project in Nepal. BKPC was incorporated in 1996 under the Nepalese Company Act. Its plant is situated in Sindhupalchowk District of central Nepal and is approximately 110 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu. The UBKHEP is a 45 MW power plant with 2 turbine/generator units.

Chilime Hydropower Plant

Chilime, Rasuwa

Chilime Hydropower Plant is a run-of-the-river type plant situated in Chilime of Rasuwa district in Nepal, which is 133 km north of Kathmandu. Its headworks are located near Chilime, whereas the underground power plant is located about 4.5 km (2.8 mi) to the southwest in Syafrubesi on the banks of the local Bhotekoshi river. Water from a weir is diverted into a reservoir before it can be used at the power plant. The difference in elevation between the reservoir and power station affords a gross hydraulic head (water drop) of 351.5 m (1,153 ft). The plant has an installed capacity of 22.1 MW. The generated electricity is fed into the national grid via a 38 km 66 kV single circuit transmission line. Most of the powerhouse facilities are underground, with the switchyard the only feature that remains on the surface. The plant employs two horizontal axis Pelton turbines each of 11.28 MW. The plant is operated by Chilime Hydropower Company Limited which is a subsidiary of Nepal Electricity Authority. The plant started its commercial generation from August 2003.

Middle Marsyangdi Hydropower Station

Siundibar, Lamjung

Middle Marsyangdi Hydropower Station located at Bhoteodar, Siundibar, Lamjung with installed capacity of 70 MW is a peaking run-of-river type scheme with daily pondage for five hours and annual design generation of 398 GWh. It was commissioned in 14 December, 2008 and uses latest technology amongst all power stations of NEA. The powerhouse and headworks of MMHPS are located at a distance of 27 km and 34 km respectively from Dumre. The Dam site is located between Udipur and Chiti and the sub-surface powerhouse is situated on the right bank of the Marsyangdi River at Siundibar, Bhoteodar VDC. The cumulative generation of the station has reached 1574.84 GWh till 2011/12 with a maximum generation of 425.34 GWh in the same year exceeding the designed generation of 397.59 GWh and target generation of 399.31 GWh. The station has contributed 10.18 % of the total energy share in INPS.
