About Nepal Water Resource Portal

The Nepal Water Resource Portal provides a complete picture of Nepal’s water resources and its varied uses. It is a database of all major and minor rivers and river basins along with operational, under construction and under survey hydropower projects on these rivers. In addition, the website includes irrigation projects and groundwater level across the country, giving a spatial representation of Nepal’s water resource and its utilities.


The team working on the portal was inspired by the lack of composite information on how water resources are used or at times even exploited. This portal, therefore, provides a tool to analyze water resources and the development of a region. It uses GIS to locate the infrastructure projects on each river, within the administrative boundaries along with the salient features of those projects, bringing to light the developmental trajectory of our rivers.

Khudi Khola Hydropower Project

Khudi hydropower plant is located in Lamjung district in western region of Nepal. The project achieved its commercial operation in December 30, 2006. The power plant has two units of 2 MW each.

Mai Khola Hydropower Project

Mai Khola Small Hydropower Project lies in Ilam District of Mechi Zone in Eastern Nepal. This 4.5 MW project has highly facilitated and hi-tech structures 48 m head works with radial hydraulic gate, 107 meter length desander 400 m open canal 750 m .3.1M dia tunnel in critical geology semi underground power house.

Lower Modi 1 Hydropower Project

The project is run of the river project at Modi Khola of Parbat district. The construction of the project started in early 2010 and was completed in August 2012. The project started generating electricity since September 2012 with a connection to National Grid. The commercial operation of the project began in November 2012, since then the project is adding 61.01 GWh of energy annually to the national power network.

Ankhu Khola 1 Hydropower Project

Dhading

Site is located in Dhading District close to 132 km from Kathmandu; Ankhu Khola is one of the major tributaries of Budhi Gandaki Nadi. The catchments area of Ankhu Khola is about 633 km2. The mean annual flow is estimated to be 58.38 cumecs. Previous capacity was 7MW which is now expanded to 8.4MW, with a design discharge of is 34.50m3/s.
