About Nepal Water Resource Portal

The Nepal Water Resource Portal provides a complete picture of Nepal’s water resources and its varied uses. It is a database of all major and minor rivers and river basins along with operational, under construction and under survey hydropower projects on these rivers. In addition, the website includes irrigation projects and groundwater level across the country, giving a spatial representation of Nepal’s water resource and its utilities.


The team working on the portal was inspired by the lack of composite information on how water resources are used or at times even exploited. This portal, therefore, provides a tool to analyze water resources and the development of a region. It uses GIS to locate the infrastructure projects on each river, within the administrative boundaries along with the salient features of those projects, bringing to light the developmental trajectory of our rivers.

Upper Trishuli-2 Hydropower Project

Haku, Rasuwa

The proposed Upper Trishuli-2 Hydroelectric project of 102 MW capacity is situated 127 km north of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, on the Trishuli River about 950 m downstream of Chilime Powerhouse (22 MW) in the Rasuwa District of Bagmati zone in the Central Development Region of Nepal. Proposed project is a Run-of-River (RoR) scheme aimed at utilizing the design discharge of 110 m3/s to generate average annual hydro-based electric energy of 593 GWh. The catchment area at the proposed intake site is 4064 km2 and the rated head is 99.6 m.

Likhu Khola Hydropower Project is a run-of-the-river type scheme located at Rawadolu, Kubu Kasthali, Khiji Kati, Khiji Chandeswori and Preeti VDCs of Okhaldhunga & Ramechhap district of Sagarmatha and Janakpur zones of Central Region of Nepal. The headworks site is located 250m downstream of the confluence of Likhu river and Sapsu khola. The powerhouse is located immediately downstream of the suspension bridge over Likhu Khola at Tosipa village. The approximate distances of powerhouse and headworks of proposed project from Bhandara Bazaar, the nearest Bazaar from the project area, 8 and 12 km respectively.
