About Nepal Water Resource Portal

The Nepal Water Resource Portal provides a complete picture of Nepal’s water resources and its varied uses. It is a database of all major and minor rivers and river basins along with operational, under construction and under survey hydropower projects on these rivers. In addition, the website includes irrigation projects and groundwater level across the country, giving a spatial representation of Nepal’s water resource and its utilities.


The team working on the portal was inspired by the lack of composite information on how water resources are used or at times even exploited. This portal, therefore, provides a tool to analyze water resources and the development of a region. It uses GIS to locate the infrastructure projects on each river, within the administrative boundaries along with the salient features of those projects, bringing to light the developmental trajectory of our rivers.

Upper Hewa Hydropower Project

Upper Hewa Khola Small Hydropower project is a run-of-river type of project located in Sankhuwasava district at Siddhapokhai and Jaljala VDCs between longitudes 87o20’45” to 87o22’30” and latitudes 27o19’34” to 27o20’55”, just upstream of existing & operational Hewa Khola Small Hydropower Project, 4.5MW which is successfully completed by Barun Hydropower Company Ltd. The same developers are going to construct this project with an installed capacity of 8.5 MW with 236.2 m net head and 4.2 m3/sec design discharge at Q40%. The catchment area is 66km2 including two collection streams Jhutre and Khakuwa Khola.

Ghar Khola Hydropower Project

GKHPP is run-off-the river (ROR) type hydropower project with an installed capacity of 14 MW (2 X 7MW) .The project has design discharge of 3.46 m3/s and net head of 480.33m that generates 78.498 GWh of energy annually. The proposed Headworks site lies at an elevation of 1645.0 m of GharKhola and the Powerhouse is located at an elevation of 1185 m, 300 m downstream of the confluence of Ghar Khola with Kaligandaki River. Project consists of about 3030 m of tunnel (Finished Dimension (2.4 m x 2.6 m). There is 57 m long Surge Pipe (Internal dia. 2.2m) followed by 1.2 m dia. 1281m long Penstock Pipe.
